환경에 대한 고려 사항이 중요하게 여겨지는 가운데 일부 기업은 실제보다 더 환경 친화적인 기업처럼 인식될 수 있도록 거짓된 인상을 심어주기 위한 방법으로 그린워싱을 택하고 있다. 철강 산업에서도 이러한 부분을 경계해야 한다.
그린워싱이란 실제로는 친환경적이지 않지만 마치 친환경적인 것처럼 홍보하는 '위장환경주의'를 의미한다.
유럽철강협회(EUROFER)는 재정적 그린워싱을 평가하고 줄이기 위해 일관된 프레임워크를 수립했다. 2021년 3월에는 그린워싱을 방지하기 위한 새로운 규정을 도입했다. 오염 물질을 많이 생산하는 부문이 친환경으로 표시된다면 그린 라벨의 의미가 없다.
EU가 지속 가능한 투자에 대한 자본 유입을 추구함에 따라 중국, 한국, 일본과 같은 아시아 국가에 대한 압박도 증가할 것이다. 철강 각 기업이 그린 라벨의 무결성을 유지하기 위해서는 서플라이체인의 모든 부분에 대해 감사(audit)를 실시하고, 비윤리적인 그린워싱 행위를 하지 않도록 주의해야 한다.
중국 철강 산업은 2025년이 되기 전에 탄소 배출의 정점에 도달할 전망이다. 2030년에는 탄소 배출량을 30% 줄이겠다는 계획을 수립했다. 중국의 이같은 친환경 정책은 철강 가격 급등으로 이어졌고, 정책 입안자들은 성장 목표의 균형을 맞추면서 철강 생산을 축소해야 하는 과제에 직면하고 있다.
글로벌 시장은 이러한 트랜드에 맞춰 빠르게 변화하고 있다.
많은 금융 서비스 제공 기업들은 이미 자체적으로 지속 가능성이 없는 택소노미 또는 다중 카테고리 택소노미를 개발하여 서비스 제공을 하고 있다.

Greenwashing and Accountability of the Steel Industry
The steel industry is said to be one of the world’s highest pollution causing industries. As the climate crisis is under growing scrutiny, and the world is scrutinizing and clamping down on the environmental impact of various industry, so is there scrutiny on the steel industry too. Environmental considerations have resulted in some companies turning to greenwashing in attempts to convey a false impression of how they may be more environmentally friendly than they are[1]. This is where the steel industry must be vigilant as well.
The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has established a consistent framework to assess and in turn reduce financial greenwashing[2]. The new rules aimed at preventing greenwashing have been introduced in March 2021[3]. A green label is not useful if it allows heavy pollutant producing sectors to be labelled green. As the EU works towards redirecting capital to sustainable investments, there is no doubt that there will be increased pressure on Asian countries such as China, South Korea and Japan. To maintain the integrity of the green label in the steel industry, companies must play their part in making sure every part of their supply chain must be audited and not be part of some of these unethical greenwashing acts.
China’s steel industry is set to hit peak emissions before 2025, before it a planned 30% reduction by 2030[4]. China’s green drive fueled a surge in steel prices, and policy makers face the challenge of balancing their growth target and rolling back on its steel production[5].
The global market is already changing rapidly in line with these trends. Many financial services providers have already developed in-house non-sustainable taxonomy or multi-category taxonomy to provide services[6]. For South Korean companies in the steel industry to continue to thrive, they will need to factor in the environmental performance of their supply chains. Having a complete overview on global sources and understanding which investments are sustainable will help them avoid potential negative reputational impact.
